The Nursery

The Nursery

When we bought our home in June of 2018, I was around 6 months pregnant with our second child. Buying a home, moving out of our rental, and trying to get settled into our new roles as homeowners, ON TOP of growing a baby was A LOT. I think by the time we were moved in and settled I was so eager to finally start the nesting part that comes with being pregnant, my motivation kicked into high gear and there was no stopping me! I took our 2 1/2 year old (at the time) along with me to pick out everything to get this nursery going. Dan was busy at work and if I wanted to get the room done sooner than later I had to do the majority of it on my own. I knew once that room was finished I would feel more at home in our new space and able to focus my attention on being pregnant and not moving houses!

The first thing I decided on, as most do when it comes to revamping a room, was the paint color. I remember seeing a gender neutral nursery on Pinterest with the most perfect paint color- Sherwin Williams “Reserved White”. It wasn’t too grey, nor too white, hence the name! I knew if we were to have a boy or have a girl that color would go perfect. I finished painting the room in to time & then comes the fun part- decorating! Not too far from our home was a Habitat for Humanity ReStore – I HIGHLY recommend visiting one if they are in your area. New home owners, baby on the way, countless upgrades needing to be done, we were on a budget! This store to me was what I needed to bring my vision to life without spending a ton. I was on the search for a dresser specifically & luckily I found exactly what I had in mind!

The dresser was perfect! And the best part? It was only $35.00! It was solid wood, had the best original pulls, and was the perfect size for a changing pad to go on top! I knew right away I wanted the color to be an emerald green and the pulls to be a brassy/gold color. If we were to have a girl I pictured her bedding being florals and that would just go so well with the green color I had in mind. If we were to have a boy, I wanted the dresser to stay as a statement piece and stick with neutrals for the rest of the room. After sanding the dresser down, removing the pulls and drawers, it was ready for paint.

The specific green paint color I chose was Valspar “Canadian Fir”. I bought one quart size in Valspar’s furniture paint, satin finish and had Lowe’s mix it for me. 1 quart was perfect and I had plenty to spare. The color painted so well and the dresser only needed 2 coats. I spray painted the pulls with Rust-oleum gold metallic spray paint- so easy AND affordable! After being painted and before replacing the pulls, Dan sealed it with a polycrylic seal in crystal clear satin. It is so important the sealer you use says ‘crystal clear’ on the can otherwise, you could end up with a yellow tint & no one wants that!

Almost three years later, the dresser is holding up so well! The pulls could perhaps use a fresh spray of paint but besides that I have zero complaints. In total I spent around $60 and every dollar was well spent. The remaining furniture for the nursery was all from our first pregnancy with our son, Daniel. Because we didn’t find out the gender with baby number 1, the furniture was all neutral! At last, the room was starting to come together and I could finally anticipate the arrival of our second baby (and feel somewhat prepared)

On October 19, 2018 Crue Henry Rogers blessed our family with his arrival & the numerous bows I brought to the hospital for our “just in case it’s a girl” were put into storage – 🤍
